A Sandersville police officer was injured early Thursday after he was shot while attempting to approach a suspect at a convenience store.
Officer Miguel Grimaldo, who is also a Jones County Sheriff's deputy, was shot in the face and arm, Chief Curtis Pitts said, but is at home recovering from his injuries.
'It's a real blessing he wasn't more seriously injured than he is,' Pitts said.
Pitts said Grimaldo was responding to a radio dispatch about 'some type of criminal activity' that had taken place at Bok Homa Casino around 2 a.m.
Police had been alerted as the suspect was headed toward Sandersville from the casino.
Grimaldo encountered the suspect at the Circle K, when the man got of the vehicle and opened fire, striking the officer. Pitts said he was not sure how many rounds were fired.

After the shooting, the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old William Belk of Pachuta, fled the scene.
Unaware he was injured, Grimaldo began to pursue Belk, who was apprehended in Laurel, Pitts said.

Laurel police found Belk at Walmart, where he was taken into custody.

Belk was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon on a police officer and booked into the Jones County Jail.

Jones County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation into Grimaldo's shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is handling the incident at the casino.
